10-Feb-19 Rail Mail
Although Britain still operates mail trains on the mainline, they no longer use the automated collection and retrieval systems that were used by the Travelling Post Office. The TPO was a mobile sorting office which at certain points on the line collected and dropped the leather mail bags (bottom right) using a net and hook system (bottom left). These services continued to operate upto 2004, the stock seen in the top photo was circa 1960's I believe. Several preservation societies now have demonstration sets to show how they work. Great Central (shown here) run two or three trains on gala days running through at original speeds.
